2014 Queensland State teams selected Share This Post

After months of trails and rigorous training session the 2014 Under 17, Under 19 and Under 21 State teams have been announced after the final selection weekend held at Logan Metro.

Netball Queensland’s future is in good hands as 75 young athletes from across the state competed for their chance to secure one of the 36 spots on offer.

After being put through their paces with some tough match play the athletes waited anxiously as coaches and selectors narrowed down their final teams.

U17 coach, Amanda Vanderwal said her age group showed a lot of potential this year and develop differently so there is always room for future development.

“The group were really talented and very receptive to what the coaches were saying and willing to try new thing,” Vanderwal said.

"The final team did pick themselves so they made it easy for selectors as they stood up on the court and there were some good combinations.”

“We are very lucky this year as we have a good mix of youth and experience in the final team.”

One young athlete with plenty of experience is U21 player Stephanie O’Brien secured her spot for a second year in a row in the U21 team.

The veteran from the Darling Downs, whose inspiration is Laura Geitz, said she was very excited to have the chance to represent Queensland in her fourth state team selection.

“It was a tough weekend and everyone played really hard so it was good to see everyone fighting for positions,” O’Brien said.

With training starting as early as Tuesday night O’Brien said she is looking forward to tough training schedule in the lead up to the National titles in March.

“My goal is to make it to the top level, to make it to the Firebirds and I will keep fighting until I do.”

Netball Queensland is pleased that we were able to announce the top 36 athletes to represent the state this weekend and we are looking forward to starting training in preparation for the National Championships next year.

The Under 21 National Netball Championships will be held in South Australia from March 11-16, 2014 with the Under 17 and Under 19 National Netball Championships in Victoria from April 6-11, 2014.
